Despite the fact that less than 2% of mariners in the industry are women, Celebrity Cruises has boldly declared that one-third of its bridge officers are female. This groundbreaking achievement is a testament to their unwavering dedication to diversity and inclusivity. Fleet-wide, 32% of officers on the bridge are female, including the first American female captain and the first West African woman on the bridge.
But the most awe-inspiring moment came when Captain Kate McCue maneuvered the Celebrity Beyond from the shipyard. She became the first female captain to start up a mega cruise ship and the first female captain to "take out" a ship from Chantiers de l'Atlantique in its 160-year shipbuilding history. This momentous event not only broke records but also shattered stereotypes and proved that anything is possible.
To take their commitment to diversity and inclusion one step further, Celebrity Cruises hosted the first sailing (2020) with an all-female bridge and officer team on International Women's Day. This historic sailing aboard the revolutionary ship, Celebrity Edge®, included special programming such as a dedicated speaker's series, networking opportunities, film and documentary screenings, and more. The goal was to inspire a new generation of girls and women to pursue careers in the maritime field, and it was a resounding success.
