Oberammergau 2030: Viking River Cruise from Prague to Budapest

Once every ten years: Oberammergau, the Danube and an extraordinary journey through Central Europe

Some journeys begin with a destination. This one begins with a promise.

In 1633, as plague swept through Bavaria, the people of Oberammergau pledged to perform the story of Christ’s suffering, death and resurrection every ten years if their village were spared further loss. They fulfilled that vow with the first Passion Play in 1634, beginning a tradition that has endured for nearly four centuries.

In July 2030, we will travel together from Vancouver to experience this remarkable production, then continue through the heart of Europe aboard the Viking Vilhjalm. Our complete journey combines Prague, Oberammergau, Salzburg and a Danube river cruise with Viking’s fully guided Croatia and Slovenia extension.

It is a grand European story told through theatre, music, medieval streets, palace-lined capitals, vineyard-covered riverbanks and the easy companionship that grows when a group shares something genuinely rare.

The Passion Play returns in 2030

Oberammergau’s Passion Play is much more than an evening at the theatre.

The production belongs to the village itself. Generations of local residents take part, maintaining a tradition born during the Thirty Years’ War and carried forward once every decade. The play depicts the final period in the life of Jesus, presented on the vast stage of the purpose-built Passion Play Theatre.

The result is part theatre, part history and part living community tradition. Whether you are drawn by faith, performance, European history or simple curiosity, being present in Oberammergau during a Passion Play year carries a special electricity.

Miss 2030 and the next scheduled opportunity will be another ten years away.

Our journey begins in Prague

We depart Vancouver on 2 July 2030, arriving in Prague on 3 July for three nights in the Czech capital.

Known as the “City of a Hundred Spires,” Prague offers a wonderfully atmospheric beginning. Gothic towers rise above red-tiled roofs, the medieval Astronomical Clock animates Old Town Square and the statues of Charles Bridge watch over the Vltava River. Viking’s three-night Prague extension includes opportunities to explore Hradčany Castle, St. Vitus Cathedral and Charles Bridge.

These first days give us time to settle into Europe, share our first meals together and wander lanes where nearly every doorway seems to have survived several centuries and at least one very dramatic opera.

Two nights in Oberammergau

On 6 July, we begin Viking’s Oberammergau programme with two nights in the Bavarian Alps.

The village is known for its painted Lüftlmalerei façades, traditional woodcarving and flower-trimmed Alpine homes. Yet during a Passion Play year, everything revolves around the performance and the promise that created it.

Viking’s programme brings together the theatre experience and time to appreciate Oberammergau itself, including its village centre and distinctive frescoed buildings.

This is the heartbeat of our journey: a performance staged only once a decade, in the village where the tradition began.

Salzburg: music, mountains and baroque beauty

On 8 July, we transfer to Salzburg for two nights.

Salzburg has a graceful theatricality of its own. Church domes and spires rise beneath the Hohensalzburg Fortress, while lanes lead towards courtyards, cafés and the squares of the UNESCO-listed historic centre.

We will explore Mozart’s birthplace, admire the architecture surrounding Domplatz and hear the city’s bells sounding above the rooftops. Salzburg is also forever linked with The Sound of Music, giving these days an irresistible mixture of high culture, Alpine scenery and the occasional urge to twirl on a hillside.

Welcome aboard the Viking Vilhjalm

On 10 July, we travel to Passau, Germany, and embark the Viking Vilhjalm for our seven-night Danube cruise to Budapest.

Viking’s Longships were designed specifically for Europe’s rivers, pairing Scandinavian-inspired interiors with large windows and spaces that keep the scenery close. Onboard meals, complimentary Wi-Fi, beer, wine and soft drinks with lunch and dinner, port charges and one included shore excursion in each port are part of Viking’s inclusive river-cruise experience.

Unpacking once is one of river cruising’s quiet luxuries. Each morning brings another city or valley to the windows, without another suitcase wrestling match in sight.

Our Danube itinerary

10–11 July: Passau, Germany

Our river journey begins in Passau, where the Danube, Inn and Ilz rivers meet. The old town is filled with patrician houses, winding streets and the ornate St. Stephen’s Cathedral. Viking also highlights the flavours of Bavaria, including regional cheeses, hams and sausages.

12 July: Linz, Austria

In Linz, we can explore the historic centre, Hauptplatz, the Old Quarter and the Mozarthaus. The city combines imperial-era architecture with a creative contemporary character and serves as a gateway to some of Austria’s loveliest countryside.

13 July: the Wachau Valley and Krems

This may be one of the most beautiful sailing days of the journey.

The Viking Vilhjalm will glide through the UNESCO-listed Wachau Valley, where vineyards climb sunlit hills and villages gather around church steeples beside the river. In Krems, Viking’s programme features a visit to Göttweig Abbey, known for its grand staircase, ceiling frescoes, library and church.

14 July: Vienna

Vienna brings imperial architecture, elegant cafés, classical music and the long shadow of the Habsburgs.

Viking’s included sightseeing introduces the city’s architectural highlights and musical heritage, while optional experiences may offer ways to explore its palaces, concert traditions and culinary pleasures in greater depth.

15 July: Bratislava and the Danube Bend

In Bratislava, Habsburg-era palaces and the hilltop castle reveal the history of Slovakia’s compact capital. Later, we sail towards Hungary through the curves and wooded hills of the Danube Bend.

It is a day that moves from cobbled streets to cinematic river scenery with barely enough time to finish your coffee between them.

16 July: Budapest

Budapest makes a magnificent finale to the cruise. Buda’s Castle District rises above one bank, while Pest spreads across the other with grand boulevards, cafés and the Hungarian Parliament standing beside the Danube.

Viking’s programme explores both halves of the city, providing a fitting conclusion to our week on the river.

Croatia and Slovenia: one more chapter

We disembark on 17 July and begin Viking’s four-night, fully guided Croatia and Slovenia extension.

Our journey continues through Central Europe with two nights in Zagreb, where medieval streets, colourful tiled roofs and café-filled squares reveal the Croatian capital’s relaxed character. Viking’s extension also features a visit to the stately Festetics Palace in Keszthely.

On 19 July, we continue to Ljubljana. Slovenia’s capital is compact, green and inviting, with riverside terraces, graceful bridges and architecture shaped by Jože Plečnik. The Viking extension also explores scenic Lake Bled and the historic town of Radovljica.

We fly home to Vancouver from Ljubljana on 21 July, carrying nearly three weeks of shared stories and a rather impressive collection of photographs, pastry opinions and new favourite cities.

Oberammergau is not an experience that can simply be moved to the following summer. Performances take place once every ten years, and preferred river-view staterooms are limited.

Viking’s current Canadian Summer Sale requires a deposit of only CAD$25 per person to secure a reservation. The offer is scheduled to expire 31 July 2026 and remains subject to availability and Viking’s booking conditions.

For our group, full final payment is due on or before 29 September 2028.

Reserving early allows you to choose from the best available staterooms while giving you plenty of time to plan, save and persuade those travel-loving friends who will be very cross when they see your photographs in 2030.
