I wish I even knew where to start to describe my year as Mr. Gay Canada. Through all my trials and tribulations, I can honestly and whole-heartedly define this experience as the most enlightening experience of my life. I started this journey insecure and unaware of the issues and events that affect our community on a daily basis. I realized quickly that in order to be someone that people could look up to I needed to be someone people didn't look down at. I re-evaluated my life and priorities and found that for years I was consumed with the need to be someone that I thought I was, all while knowing the person I was supposed to be.
During the Mr. Gay World competition we were privy to take part in the International Human Rights Conference where we sat in on discussions varying in topics from pride celebrations, sexual health, and diversity in the workplace. The police department of Antwerp, Belgium put us through their police training for our "sports challenge" and after climbing buildings, lugging dummies on stretchers, obstacle courses and firearms I was proud to have placed 5th. The part of the competition I must say that I could not be more grateful for, was the opportunity to meet some of the finest men the world had to offer. They were smart, strong and dedicated. Each man a different story, but a common understanding and appreciation of where this world could be if we all would use our hearts and heads and stand up for what's right. These fine men gave me the honour and title of Mr. Gay World Congeniality 2013 and that to me is a title that I think suits me and Canada just fine.
So far, in my term as Mr. Gay Canada, I have had the opportunity to push my personal boundaries and dive deeper into the world and community around me.. I was able to finally see a bigger picture. I now have a better grasp of the where I stand in this world and the power that one voice can have. It's been said that you only have one chance; this is my third. Thank you to the Mr Gay Canada organization for this amazing opportunity and here's to the future.
