How to go in 2021

Our friends at Intrepid Travel shares their "how to go" list with five foundations to shape the future of travel and tours.

1. GO ON A HUMAN-POWERED ADVENTURE

Cycling in London is up 300%, while Canadians are walking 66% more. Human-powered adventures – whether hiking or biking – are good for you and the planet. Next year, expect more travellers to take their new passions into new territory.

Explore the land of the rising sun - Japan! Explore the Hida region on bicycle and ride by rice fields and experience rural villages. Make a splash with log river rafting on the Kitayama River in the Wakayama region. Go for a pilgrimage on the UNESCO world heritage Kumano Kodo trails in southern Kansai.

Another popular pilgrimage is the famed Camino de Santiago trail in Portugal.

2. GO TO REGENERATE, NOT JUST SUSTAIN

Pre-pandemic, the global tourism industry accounted for 1 in 10 jobs worldwide. But it also contributed to 8% of global GHG emissions. In 2021, we need to think about how our travels can help to both preserve and heal the planet.

3. GO SLOWER

Travelling slowly is one of the most impactful ways to make your adventures more sustainable. Slow travel also helps us to create more meaningful connections and truly appreciate the experience. Expect more mindfulness and intentionality in travel for 2021.

4. GO INTO THE WILD

National Parks have seen record numbers of visitors this year. Researchers are advocating for less "screen-time" and more "green-time". And we're asking: is wilderness the new wellness? 2021 is all about a deeper connection with the natural world.

5. GO ON YOUR OWN TERMS

Comfort, safety and flexibility is more desired than ever before. Whether you want to "book with your bubble", go solo or stay close to home, the most important thing about 2021 travel is doing what feels right for you.

Being Intrepid is an attitude – a willingness to take yourself far away from home, to be curious, to be challenged, and to be open to new perspectives and experiences.

Intrepid travellers are of all ages and come from all walks of life, but they share a desire to forge genuine connections through travel. They are united not by where they’ve come from, but by where they’re going.

Intrepid’s immersive adventures take travellers beyond the usual tourist sights and down the road less travelled. They’re about opening doors you could only find with a local friend, to get behind the scenes of a destination and finding out what makes it tick. They’re about connecting with locals and like-minded travellers in a meaningful way – making the big wide world feel smaller, and more connected.

With an average group size of just 10 people, we can eat, sleep and get around the local way, going where the bigger groups can’t, and becoming more than just a face in the crowd. Our smaller group sizes also mean we can tread lightly, making a positive impact to local communities and the environment.

We understand our travellers need a balance between the guidance of a local leader, and making their own discoveries. That’s why Intrepid itineraries offer planned activities with varied inclusions, and plenty of free time.

With more than 1,000 itineraries that explore over 100 countries, there are many ways to Be Intrepid with Intrepid Travel.
