Explora III luxury cruise ship sails away with mountains in the background

16 nights | 11–27 September 2027 | Vancouver, Canada to Tokyo, Japan | Exclusive Ensemble Hosted Cruise

Alaska's magnificent glaciers. Nine days at sea. Extraordinary restaurants. Beautifully crafted cocktails. A luxury oceanfront suite. And Japan waiting at the other end.

Now that is my kind of Pacific crossing!

I am delighted to share that I have been assigned as the Ensemble Travel Host aboard EXPLORA III, sailing from Vancouver to Tokyo in September 2027.

And I must confess something: Explora Journeys is one of my all-time favourite luxury cruise experiences.

For me, it is the culinary adventures, remarkable wines, imaginative cocktails and impressive whisky collection. It is the pleasure of returning to a beautifully designed suite, slipping into a whirlpool, or enjoying a quiet moment with nothing between you and the horizon.

Then there are the pools, spa, gym and Reformer Pilates facilities. Yes, Pilates at sea. I can already see my mornings taking shape!

Explora calls this its Ocean State of Mind. Having experienced the brand, I understand the appeal.

And this particular voyage combines that indulgent lifestyle with an extraordinary itinerary.

Why this Vancouver to Tokyo voyage is so special

Some cruises are all about the ports. Others are about the ship.

This one gives us the best of both, with a glorious stretch of open ocean in between.

In 2027, EXPLORA III begins Explora Journeys' inaugural Alaska season before heading to Asia for the brand's first itineraries in the region.

Our 16-night journey, officially titled A Grand Journey from Glacier Majesty to Japanese Grace, connects these two exciting chapters.

We depart from Vancouver on 11 September 2027, explore Alaska's dramatic coastline, cross the North Pacific and International Date Line, and arrive in Tokyo on 27 September 2027.

Imagine the contrast. One day, you are standing on deck admiring the immense face of Hubbard Glacier. Later in the voyage, you are enjoying Japanese seafood and learning about the remarkable wildlife of Hokkaido.

And between those moments? Time to truly enjoy one of the newest luxury ships at sea.

If you love longer voyages, memorable dining and the delicious freedom of having absolutely nowhere else you need to be, this itinerary deserves your attention.

From Canada's Pacific coast to the heart of Japan

Vancouver, Ketchikan, Sitka and Alaska's magnificent glaciers

Our adventure begins in Vancouver on 11 September, sailing past the mountains and islands of Canada's beautiful Pacific coast.

On 13 September, we arrive in Ketchikan, a community shaped by its maritime history and the cultures of Alaska's Indigenous peoples. Explore the historic Creek Street waterfront, discover local art and traditions, or consider an excursion into the rainforest and fjords.

Sitka follows on 14 September, offering a fascinating blend of Tlingit heritage, Russian-era history and spectacular natural scenery. This is an excellent place to explore coastal walking trails, wildlife conservation or the waters of Sitka Sound.

Then comes one of the visual highlights of the entire voyage.

On 15 September, EXPLORA III is scheduled to cruise alongside Hubbard Glacier, one of Alaska's great tidewater glaciers.

Picture towering walls of ice, shifting shades of blue, distant snow-covered peaks and the possibility of hearing glaciers crack and calve into the sea.

This is precisely where having a private oceanfront terrace becomes rather wonderful.

Our final Alaskan port is Seward on 16 September, gateway to Resurrection Bay and the spectacular Kenai Fjords region.

There are opportunities for wildlife viewing, sightseeing by boat and discovering the dramatic landscapes of this corner of Alaska.

And then, we head west.

Crossing the North Pacific: The luxury of slowing down

Here is where this itinerary becomes particularly appealing to me.

We have nine days at sea across the 16-night voyage, including a long stretch as we cross the Pacific towards Japan.

Now, some travellers look at sea days and wonder what they will do.

On EXPLORA III, I suspect the bigger question will be what we can possibly fit into them all.

A leisurely breakfast. Perhaps a morning workout or Pilates session. A long lunch. Some reading by the covered pool. A treatment at Ocean Wellness. Afternoon tea or an interesting wine tasting. A beautiful dinner followed by live music and another excellent cocktail.

And somewhere in there, perhaps a nap in that gorgeous suite.

The North Pacific can bring cooler temperatures and changeable sea conditions in September. This is a genuine ocean crossing, rather than a tropical cruise. For guests who appreciate the rhythm of longer voyages, the sheltered wellness spaces and generous indoor lounges make that part of the attraction.

We will also cross the International Date Line, one of those memorable little milestones of ocean travel.

Japan: Kushiro, Aomori and Tokyo

On 24 September, we arrive in Kushiro on the island of Hokkaido.

Kushiro is known for its seafood, wetlands and endangered red-crowned cranes. And this port is particularly special because it is where our planned exclusive Ensemble Experience takes place.

More on that delicious little bonus shortly!

On 25 September, EXPLORA III calls at Aomori, on the northern tip of Japan's main island, Honshu.

Here, guests can explore Japanese art, ancient archaeology and regional cuisine. The Nebuta Museum Wa Rasse celebrates the spectacular illuminated floats associated with Aomori's famous festival, while the Sannai-Maruyama archaeological site offers insights into Japan's prehistoric Jomon culture.

After a final day at sea, we arrive in Tokyo on 27 September.

And why rush home?

I would love to help you extend your journey with a few days exploring Tokyo's incredible food scene, neighbourhoods, gardens and cultural treasures.

Perhaps Kyoto's temples, traditional inns and refined cuisine are calling. Or maybe an indulgent stay at a Japanese hot-spring retreat?

The possibilities are enticing.

Meet EXPLORA III: Your luxury home at sea

Launched in 2026, EXPLORA III is the third ship in the Explora Journeys fleet.

She features 461 oceanfront suites, seven restaurants, 12 bars and lounges, and five heated swimming pools.

But what draws me to Explora isn't simply the impressive list of amenities.

It is how everything comes together.

The contemporary interiors, natural light, thoughtful service and generous outdoor spaces evoke an elegant European resort hotel that happens to travel between extraordinary destinations.

And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that!

The restaurants: A foodie paradise at sea

I could devote an entire blog to the culinary experiences of Explora Journeys.

Actually, I probably should.

Dining has always been one of the biggest reasons I love this cruise brand.

EXPLORA III features familiar favourites along with new culinary concepts.

At Sakura, discover beautifully presented Pan-Asian cuisine, sushi and dishes inspired by Japan and other Asian culinary traditions.

Marble & Co. Grill celebrates a sophisticated European steakhouse experience, while Med Yacht Club brings the flavours and relaxed pleasures of Mediterranean dining to sea.

For French-inspired cuisine, there is Fil Rouge.

And let's talk about Emporium Marketplace.

Forget the standard cruise buffet image. Emporium's chef-led food stations, fresh seafood, made-to-order dishes and varied international offerings create an experience that early ship reviewers have particularly enjoyed.

Then there is Shore Club on 11, a newer, relaxed poolside dining concept on EXPLORA III, inspired by carefree coastal living.

For a special culinary occasion, consider Anthology, an elevated dining experience with an additional charge, or the ship's new Chef's Table, where personalised menus and private culinary experiences take centre stage.

This is a ship where deciding where to have dinner might become your greatest daily challenge.

A challenge I am entirely willing to accept.

Cocktails, whisky and wine: Decisions, decisions!

Now we're talking.

Explora Journeys knows how to create a proper bar experience.

And I am particularly fond of the attention given to the drinks programme, from elegant wines and Champagne to inventive cocktails, interesting whiskies and an impressive range of non-alcoholic options.

With 12 bars and lounges aboard EXPLORA III, there is a setting to suit almost every mood.

The Malt Whisky Bar will certainly be on my radar, with its selection of whiskies from around the world and whisky-based cocktails.

And a particularly interesting addition is The Cellar by Explora Journeys.

This intimate wine-focused space invites guests to explore Old World favourites, expressive New World wines and selected rare vintages, with guidance from knowledgeable Cellar Masters.

It sounds like a place where a quick glass of wine could easily become a very enjoyable afternoon.

There are also excellent options for guests who prefer not to drink alcohol.

Speciality coffees, teas, soft drinks and non-alcoholic beverages are part of Explora's generous beverage offering, alongside a selection of fine wines, Champagne and premium spirits.

Rare wines, exclusive bottles, certain speciality drinks and curated tastings may involve an additional charge.

I appreciate having choices. And I particularly appreciate a drinks programme that gives non-drinkers something more interesting than another ordinary soft drink.

The suites: Fair warning, you may never want to leave

I am utterly obsessed with Explora Journeys' suites.

There. I've said it.

Every accommodation aboard EXPLORA III is an oceanfront suite, penthouse or residence with a private terrace.

Even the entry-level Ocean Terrace Suites offer an impressive residential feel, with beautiful natural light, comfortable lounge areas and thoughtful amenities.

Think sumptuous bedding, a walk-in wardrobe, an espresso machine, a well-stocked minibar, binoculars for admiring the scenery and an outdoor daybed.

And then there are the bathrooms.

Heated floors, luxurious toiletries, plush towels and beautiful finishes. Selected suites also feature bathtubs.

You can even select preferred beverages for your suite from the available onboard selection.

For travellers who wish to take their indulgence a little further, the larger penthouses and residences offer additional space, elevated services and, in selected categories, private outdoor whirlpools.

I would be happy to help identify the suite category that best matches your lifestyle, budget and preferred location aboard the ship.

After all, when crossing the Pacific, your suite should be somewhere you genuinely love spending time.

Pools, whirlpools, Pilates and Ocean Wellness

Here is another reason I find Explora Journeys so appealing.

The ship's wellness facilities are designed to become part of daily life rather than an occasional appointment.

EXPLORA III has five heated swimming pools, including the beautiful Conservatory Pool, with its retractable glass roof.

For an autumn Pacific crossing, this covered space is especially appealing.

There are also outdoor pools, whirlpools and numerous places to lounge with a book or take in the views.

The reimagined Ocean Wellness area brings together the spa, fitness facilities and studio.

Its amenities include a thermal wellness area, Technogym equipment, Reformer Pilates machines and options for group or personalised fitness sessions.

There is even an outdoor sports court with padel and pickleball.

Yes, I really am this enthusiastic about Pilates on a ship.

And then there's the spa, with thermal facilities and a selection of treatments for those moments when you wish to indulge a little further.

Morning Pilates, afternoon whirlpool, evening Champagne?

Balance, darling. Balance.

An exclusive Ensemble Hosted Experience in Kushiro

Here is something that makes this sailing especially interesting when you arrange your journey through my departuresXdean Ensemble Hosted programme.

Our planned exclusive shore experience is Kushiro Highlights, a complimentary Ensemble shore event for eligible guests, subject to the programme's participation and capacity requirements.

This curated outing introduces us to the natural beauty, local flavours and wildlife of eastern Hokkaido.

We begin at Washo Fish Market, one of the region's well-known seafood markets.

Imagine displays of fresh seafood, bustling vendors and opportunities to explore local food traditions. Guests interested in regional specialities can look out for katte-don, a customisable seafood rice bowl.

From there, we head into the landscapes of Kushiro Marshland, Japan's largest wetland and marsh habitat.

Our planned visit includes an approximately 20-minute guided stroll along a wooden boardwalk, with opportunities to learn about the ecology and wildlife of this remarkable environment.

Next comes the Akan International Crane Center, dedicated to public education and research concerning the endangered Japanese red-crowned crane, known as the tancho.

These remarkable birds are among the most recognisable symbols of Hokkaido.

And because no excellent travel day should end without an interesting culinary discovery, our excursion includes a stop at a local coffee shop.

The featured local speciality?

Vanilla ice cream topped with paprika-flavoured jam.

Well, I certainly wasn't expecting that!

It is the kind of unexpected local experience that makes travel memorable.

Please note: The Ensemble shore event is subject to minimum participation, capacity limits and operational changes. Individual food purchases and optional tastings may cost extra. Final arrangements will be confirmed by the onboard host.

Explora III sailing off from Vancouver to Tokyo

What are early guests saying about EXPLORA III?

Since EXPLORA III only entered service in 2026, independent passenger feedback is still developing.

However, the early response is encouraging.

On Cruise Critic's EXPLORA III review page, two published guest reviews from August 2026 praise the ship's elegance, service and dining.

One guest titled their review "The best cruise we have ever taken", highlighting the impressive ship and attentive crew.

Another praised its contemporary design, dining choices and service, while suggesting that more complimentary shore excursions would be welcome.

Meanwhile, Travel + Leisure's August 2026 review praised EXPLORA III's food, wine programme, elegant suites and swimming pools after a preview voyage.

The publication also highlighted new concepts such as The Cellar and Chef's Table.

That early enthusiasm reflects much of what I have personally enjoyed about the Explora Journeys brand.

Beautiful design matters. But for me, the real pleasure comes from how comfortable, relaxed and genuinely enjoyable a ship feels after several days on board.

And with a 16-night journey, we will have plenty of time to discover that rhythm for ourselves.

Why join my Ensemble Hosted sailing?

I have been fortunate to sail on a wide variety of luxury cruise lines during my career.

Explora Journeys holds a particularly special place on my favourites list, and I am excited to introduce more travellers to the experience.

As an assigned Ensemble Travel Host, my role is to help make our hosted sailing welcoming, enjoyable and memorable.

When the minimum hosted-group requirements are met, I will accompany the voyage and a private cocktail reception will be scheduled for our participating guests.

Think of it as an opportunity to meet fellow travellers, swap stories and raise a glass together.

There is no expectation that you spend your entire holiday travelling as a group.

That is part of the appeal.

Enjoy your own itinerary, dine when you wish, spend quiet time in your suite and join our hosted gatherings when the mood strikes.

Whether you are travelling with your partner, a friend, as a solo explorer, or as part of our wider LGBTQ+ travel community and its welcoming allies, my goal is to help you feel comfortable and free to enjoy the voyage your way.

I can also assist with your suite selection, travel arrangements, insurance considerations, and pre- or post-cruise experiences in Vancouver and Japan.

My favourite travel memories often come from experiences shared with interesting people.

And I suspect this Pacific crossing will provide plenty of opportunities to make new ones.

What is included in your EXPLORA III journey?

Explora Journeys offers an extensive collection of inclusions that makes spending time aboard especially enjoyable.

Your standard journey includes:

  • Nine culinary experiences, including in-suite dining, alongside access to additional speciality dining choices.

  • A generous selection of fine wines, Champagne, premium spirits, speciality coffees, teas and non-alcoholic beverages.

  • A welcome bottle of Champagne, plus a selected bottle of wine and spirit for your suite.

  • Access to the Ocean Wellness spa thermal area and selected group wellness and fitness activities.

  • High-speed Wi-Fi, onboard gratuities and port-to-city shuttles where available.

Premium dining experiences, selected rare wines and spirits, private treatments, personalised activities and most destination excursions may carry additional charges.

For guests eligible for our hosted programme, the proposed complimentary Kushiro Ensemble shore event provides an additional benefit beyond the standard journey inclusions.

I will review the applicable fare, available amenities and conditions with you before confirming your reservation.
